Ride Summary

This stretch of approximately 35km is a mixed bag of sweeping fast corners to more technical stuff as the road enters the forest and starts to wind its way down through Toolangi and Chums Creek.

Ride Description

A fun ride that can be interlinked with the many rides that land you in Kinglake after entering the Yarra Valley (see the Eltham to Kinglake ride as a good example). The ride begins with 100km/h sweeping bends and straights, with near perfect road surface. On a good day, the views from the top are beautiful across the plains. As the road begins to descend towards Toolangi, you enter the forest and the vegetation becomes thick – creating a canopy over most of the road for the duration of the ride down into Healesville. There are some great technical sections through this part of the ride, and some nice slow hairpin corners to get the knee down. As the ride gets closer to Healesville the road opens up again before slowing you down to 80km/h and then 60km/h as you hit the town.

Directions

Kinglake, where the ride begins, is approximately 60km from Melbourne CBD and can be reached by a number of different rides (which all are far better than using the Eastern Freeway). Once in the town, follow the signs towards Healesville along the Healesville Kinglake Road (C724).

Best Thing About This Ride

The mixture of fast corners and technical sections make this road a little bit special.

What Else To Look Out For

Road debris from the canopy of trees through the forested section can sometime be unsettling. Also watch out for water across the road particularly in water – if it is sunny and dry at the top of the road near Kinglake this does not always mean that the whole road is dry. Something to watch out for.
