Ride Summary

A popular ride from Eltham towards Kinglake in the Yarra Valley. Although this ride is not as good as it used to be (the fun section of this road is now limited to a slow 60km p/hour) it is still a worthwhile alternative way to travel to Kinglake.

Ride Description

This ride although limited by a rather slow 60km p/hour, is still fun as there are some very technical sections particularly a you wind up the mountain towards Kinglake from St Andrews. Lots of 15km p/hour hairpin curves and some good sections with linking S-curves make the other more sedate sections of this road  worth it.

Directions

This ride begins in the town of Eltham, which is located approximately 25km from Melbourne CBD. Once in Eltham, follow the signs towards Kangaroo Ground and Panton Hill towards Kinglake.

Best Thing About This Ride

The section from St Andrews towards Kinglake, particularly as you climb the mountain. Kinglake also has a good cafe and is worth the stop – if nothing more than to support a community that was hit hard with recent bush fires in this area.

What Else To Look Out For

As with this entire area of Victoria, watch your speed. Not only is this area highly policed – you can almost guarantee a presence over the weekend, sections of this ride is signposted slow for a reason. Many riders have come in to hot and paid the price – don’t be the next.
