Ride Summary

37 kilometres long, the Skenes Creek Road ride has a corner ratio of 80% and fair corner speeds. Traffic is light, with less than one car every ten minutes on average. The road is subject to occasional bumps, and the bitumen grip is patchy in sections.

Ride Description

This ride follows the Otway Ranges down to the Great Ocean Road, and, following it, you will experience plenty of exciting swervery and beautiful scenery at the same time. The road carries you into deep troughs of rustling, ferny greenery, then up onto ridges that give a prospect of brilliant emerald slopes falling towards the Tasman Sea, and back into fern-tunnels again before the next ridge. The last part of the road loops back and forth down a mighty slope with a vista out over the Tasman Sea.

The road is spacious, the surface is excellent save for a few glossy corners, and the radii of the curves are perfect for motorcyclists, besides being consistent so that you can maintain the same speed safely throughout the bend, rather than being tricked into excess speed by a subtly-diminishing radius.

Directions

Forrest is sited some 135 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. To reach it, cross the West Gate Bridge onto Princes Highway, which should be followed through Geelong to Winchelsea. At Winchelsea, take the left turn that leads to Deans Marsh, then through Barwon Downs and finally to Forrest. Seek for the signs that lead to Skenes Creek and/or Apollo Bay.

Best Thing About This Ride

The splendid scenery of this ride is its absolutely best feature, although the excellent and well-proportioned bends are a close second – this is a very enjoyable ride for several different reasons.

What Else To Look Out For

The worst hazard you will encounter on the Skenes Creek Road ride are the glossy patches on some of the corners, although these are usually limited enough so they can be avoided if you stay alert and are aware that they are likely to be coming.
