Ride Summary

This ride is 89 kilometres long, with a corner ratio of 70%. Corner speeds are either medium or fast, depending on the corner. Cars are encountered at a rate of one every 3 minutes. Bitumen grip is excellent and the road surface is smooth.

Ride Description

Stretching between Cann River and Bombala, which is located in New South Wales, this ride includes plenty of magnificent high-speed riding opportunities for motorcyclists and is one of the most excellent in the region. The first section of road snakes through the Cann River flood plain, gradually ascending, for a distance of 45 kilometres. The road features superb, grippy surfacing throughout this section, with many clusters of exciting high-speed sweepers, also with plenty of grip allowing you to ride them enjoyably. A few of these sweeping corners are blind.

As the road draws near the New South Wales border, it climbs sharply and loses its smoothness due to logging truck damage, but this is not extensive enough to make the surface hazardous. Past the border, on the last few kilometres into Rockton Junction, the road is smooth again, with beautiful surfacing, huge, fast sweeping curves that are great fun to negotiate, and clear visibility. All of the ride from Cann River to Rockton Junction is technical and can be ridden at speed once you learn it. It is also immensely satisfying and is a favorite with all motorcyclists who try it.

Rockton Junction lacks a petrol station, and from this point you have two choices of route. You can continue 30 kilometres north to Bombala, where petrol is available, or you can turn right onto the Imlay Road in the direction of the coast, onto another excellent, extremely enjoyable road. This ride is a fast, wide logging road without intersections that extends for 56 kilometres. The north side pavement has been chewed up by logging trucks with full loads, while the south side’s surface is much better.

You can see large numbers of black wallabies and kangaroos along this route, especially closer to dawn and sunset. The beasts are accustomed to traffic and seldom bolt across the road. The police are absent from this route, and while the ride down to the coast is very good, the uphill ride back is outstanding. There are many large sweeping curves suitable for high speeds around the flanks of the hills, with one long right-hand curve close to Rockton Junction is extremely rough (enough for tank slappers) on the downhill side of the road, so many motorcyclists use the other lane for both directions.

Directions

Found 440 kilometres east of Melbourne, Cann River is reached by taking Princes Highway through Orbost to the town. Once the town is reached, you should take the only left (northward) turn out of town – this puts you directly on the ride.

Best Thing About This Ride

The best things about the ride are the fast sweepers, especially those on the coastal road from Rockton Junction, and some excellent take-out food available in Cann River diagonally across from the petrol station.

What Else To Look Out For

There is some police presence near the outskirts of Cann River. Gas is not available at the next town on the ride, Rockton Junction, so be sure to fill up in Cann River itself. There is a handful of blind corners on the route.
