Ride Summary

This long circuit ride takes in the eastern peninsula of the North Island and provides some challenging riding and wonderful scenery.

Ride Description

This ride is a long coastal route that passes through numerous bays, past beaches and along cliff tops. It is a little used route, not well known for its tourists, which makes it great as a ‘road less followed’ ride. There are plenty of historical spots to stop at, and the area was well known for its whaling so there are references found along the route.

Directions

Head east out of Opotiki on the SH 35 and continue until you reach the town of Gisborne. From there you can return to Opotiki by turning right onto the SH2 which will take you straight back.

Best Thing About This Ride

This motorcycle route is challenging thanks to the twisting turns as its hugs the coastline, so riders who like a bit of challenge will have great fun here. The Matawai Hotel is a haven for bikers and well worth a visit, as is the Macadamia Nut Farm in Whanarua Bay, where their home made ice cream is a real favourite.

What Else To Look Out For

The road isn’t well maintained because it’s not considered to be a main route, and in or after bad weather be wary of landslips or debris on its surface. There are few petrol stations, and where you can get fuel it tends to be expensive, so fill your tank before you leave.
