Ride Summary

An enjoyable 2.5 hour ride at the head of North Island, offering a superb escape from the city and a chance to enjoy some stunning New Zealand countryside.

Ride Description

This route is a superb ride without too many challenges. Leaving from Auckland you’ll be heading north on a superb alternative route to the traditional SH1 and Auckland Harbour Bridge. Taking the SH16 instead will lead you towards Te Atatu South, past Waiatarua and through the wine country of Henderson. The film, The Piano, was set at some of the beaches along here (Muriwai and Piha) and they offer a great place to stop to admire the view.

Directions

Head westwards out of Auckland, avoiding the temptation to head immediately north, and follow the SH16 until you reach Te Atatu South. Turn west again onto the SH13 and continue to Waiatarua, continuing to follow the road as it sweeps north to eventually rejoin the SH16 at Kumeu. Follow this road all the way through to Wellsford.

Best Thing About This Ride

This road is long and sweeping, with gentle curving bends that are perfect for a lazy day on the bike. You don’t have to apply much effort to your ride here. What is also good is the lack of traffic, because most will be on the main SH1.

What Else to Look Out For

You can take the opportunity to enjoy some superb stops along the way here, including a detour into the stunning Auckland Centennial Park at Waiatarua.
