Ride Summary

This route is 17 kilometres long and has a corner ratio of 85%; most of the corners have a medium corner speeds, but some must be rounded at very slow speeds, while others can be taken at high speed. One car a minute is the average traffic. The bitumen grip is good, but the road surface is occasionally bumpy.

Ride Description

This is a superb, delightful road for motorcyclists – you might even say a “hoot” – because of its mixed corner types and the technical (but not too technical) nature of many of these bends. You can find yourself negotiating flip-flops, off-camber corners, hairpin turns, decreasing radius corners, a few sweeping curves, and a handful of straightaways, all within a few kilometres of each other. It is sure to get your adrenaline pumping and leave you feeling exhilarated at the end of the ride.

Because of the decreasing-radius and off-camber corners, you should traverse this ride cautiously several times to learn the route and its potential hazards, and then you can blast through it with great enjoyment. There is also magnificent Grampians landscape to enjoy from the various turnouts along the route, and you can enjoy the company of some wallabies and kangaroos at Zumsteins as well.

Directions

Located in the Grampians, the Hall’s Gap to Zumsteins ride is approached from Melbourne by following the Western Highway. Turn off at Ballarat, then turn left and west at Stawell and travel 24 kilometres further to Hall’s Gap. There are plenty of other choices to reach the start of this ride, however, and a good map is the best guide to reaching it.

Best Thing About This Ride

The ever-shifting corners of many different types, radii, and speeds, and the fun you can have negotiating these curves and bends, is the high point of this ride, although the splendid vistas from the turnouts are also very attractive reasons to take this ride.

What Else To Look Out For

Because tourists also favor the Hall’s Gap to Zumsteins route, you should beware of both dawdling tourist cars and a bus or two along the way. Some of the corners have a good deal of rippling, and one at the midpoint of the ride is afflicted with “pimpling” that renders it very dangerous unless you are driving slowly.
