Ride Summary

The Mount Macedon ride is 26 kilometres long, featuring an 80% corner ratio and corner speeds that may be slow, fair, or medium. Cars are fairly frequent on this stretch and you are likely to encounter one every two minutes on average. The bitumen grip is good, but the road’s surface is bumpy almost everywhere along its length.

Ride Description

This route runs from Woodend to Macedon, climbing up one flank of the lofty Mount Macedon and descending the other to the highway. There are plenty of corners, although a few of these are unfortunately bumpy and there is one dangerous hairpin turn that often has gravel or leaf debris on it. The ride is still an excellent one, however, and the views and other features make it truly remarkable.

Mount Macedon is quite tall, and from its summit, you will gain a huge, beautiful vista southwards over the tablelands. The descending road has an 80 kilometre per hour speed limit. When you crest the hill riding up from Woodend, you will come upon a right turn. This leads, in just a few kilometres, to a war memorial named The Cross, where there are parking areas and a tourist center. The Cross is well worth a visit, despite a 300 metre walk to reach it from the tourist center, because of the excellent views of Melbourne that this vantage point provides.

Directions

Mount Macedon is located on the southern fringes of the Great Barrier Range, and Woodend is reached by the Calder Highway.

Best Thing About This Ride

The views from Mount Macedon and The Cross are spectacular enough to qualify as one of the best things about this ride, which also features plenty of interesting corners and terrain features for you to enjoy.

What Else To Look Out For

One of the biggest hazards of this ride is a 10km p/hr hairpin bend at one point, which is made even riskier by a mix of leaf litter and gravel on the road surface more often than not. Tourists frequent Mount Macedon township, so you should beware of traffic as well.
