Ride Summary

This 25-kilometre ride has a 60% corner ratio; the typical corner speed is fast. You are likely to encounter 1 car every 10 minutes. The bitumen grip is good, but the road surface is bumpy and rippled thanks to many logging trucks.

Ride Description

Swerving and twisting through heavy eucalyptus forest that blankets the low hills of this region of the Great Dividing Range, the Greendale to Trentham ride offers plenty of entertainment and interesting challenges to motorcyclists who traverse it. The initial stretch from Greendale to Blackwood – where you can eat, if desired, and refuel your motorcycle – is very bumpy thanks to the logging trucks, and is of average width. The good road surface helps to compensate for the bumps.

The second stretch of the road, which lasts from Blackwood nearly to Trentham, the ride’s further end, has been resurfaced more recently and is in far superior condition. It is much wider than the first portion, and has excellent bitumen grip. The last few kilometres are similar to the starting road.

The Greendale to Trentham ride is notable for its excellent curves and bends. The first portion, up to Blackwood, features many medium-radius curves which are enjoyable to take at a moderate speed, and are exciting and challenging to negotiate at high speed, at least for experienced riders. The latter part of the ride, after Blackwood, has large, sweeping curves which can be taken at high speed.

This route is also useful as a link road when you are returning to Melbourne from Daylesford. Turning left at Greendale up the hill, then staying left so as to follow the old freeway rather than joining the Western Highway, you can experience approximately seven kilometres of superb sweeping curves, which often pass above or beneath the newer freeway. Stationary silver falcons may be found on the down ramps, so you should stay alert for these. The old route passes through Myrniong and eventually rejoins the Western Highway.

Best Thing About This Ride

The many fine corners, which provide the ride’s mix of challenging medium-radius corners and grand sweepers, are the best feature of this route.

What Else To Look Out For

The rippled surface and numerous bumps on the first part of the ride, from Greendale to Blackwood, is the largest hazard on this road. These bumps are numerous and strong enough to deserve respect and caution.
