Ride Summary

This ride stretches for 54 kilometres and has an overall corner ratio of 40%, with a mix of medium and fast corner speeds. The number of cars varies from one every 5 minutes to one every 2 minutes. The surface is smooth, with some exceptions, and the bitumen grip is good.

Ride Description

Few roads can match the motorcycling pleasure of the stretch from Mt. Hotham to Omeo, which boasts a perfect surface for most of its length, excellent sweeping bends, and fine visibility. The road twists and turns its way down through the mountains outside Mt. Hotham and the foothills thereafter, and is good for high-speed corner work with lots of visibility for safety and confidence. The splendid landforms of the Great Dividing Range and the rolling, pine-plantation-dotted hills below the mountains, furnish plenty of viewing pleasure when you are able to take your eyes off the road.

Many motorcyclists enjoy stopping at Dinner Plain, which is 11 kilometres into the ride from the Mt. Hotham end, rather than Hotham Heights, the alternative food and fuel stop. There is a very good café at the hilltop where you can obtain both delicious food and refreshing drink. Viewing the town’s architecture is also an interesting experience.

Directions

This is a section of the Great Alpine Road which is accessed via Bright and Harrietville from the north, and from Bairnesdale and Bruthen from the south.

Best Thing About This Ride

The near perfect road surface, sweeping high speed corners and the fantastic views. It really is that good!

What Else To Look Out For

Some fast downhill corners outside Dinner Plain are deteriorating, with rippling and humping of the surface. These corners are posted at 65 kilometres per hour. Alertness and a steady hand while steering are your keys to negotiating these without problems. The rest of the road is in basically excellent condition, however. The weekends witness a considerable police patrol presence, and there is chance of patrols at other times as well.
