The 212 km ride from Keith to Mt. Gambier can be tough, depending on the weather, but the destination, one of Australia’s premier grape growing areas is well worth the trip.
Ride Description
The ride from Keith along the Riddoch Highway is fast and very enjoyable in good weather. The weather along this stretch of road can also be very windy and cold and wet, especially in winter. Road surfaces are good and towns are regularly spaced along the route. The area around Coonawarra is famous for its terra rossa, or red soil which just happens to be ideal for growing grapes. There are more than 25 wineries between Coonawarra and Penola.
Directions
Take the Dukes Highway to Keith, and then turn off onto the Riddoch Highway. From there, head south to Naracoorte and Mt. Gambier.

Best Thing About This Ride
Wine lovers will love this ride and especially the destination. The terra rossa is a patch of red soil that’s only 14 km long and 2 km wide, but it’s packed with vineyards and wineries. Some outstanding wines are produced in this area.
