Ride Summary

As motorbike rides go, this ride is pretty short but you’ll be hard pressed to find one much better than this 3km corkscrew of a ride up a very steep hill. To make it even more challenging, the traffic backing out of private driveways (sometimes right by a tight corner) keeps you alert to say the least!

Ride Description

There are few roads in Australia, even in Adelaide which are as defined and delimited as the Corkscrew. It runs from the Gorge Road at Castambul to the Montacute Road at Monticute, with t-intersections at both ends.

The fun begins at the northern (Torrens River) end, where the road follows a small creek upstream for a bit. Don’t let this gentle little stretch fool you though, the fun is just beginning. The road leaves the creek where Valley Road turns off to the left, and makes a run at the wall-like head of the valley before it corkscrews its way up the very steep hill to the top. Thankfully, the road is fairly wide, has good surface, and is well maintained. At the top, the road joins the Montacute Road (a main artery into Adelaide).

Directions

From Castambul, take the Gorge Road to the junction at Corkscrew Road. Travel up to the top, to junction with Montacute.

Best Thing About This Ride

In a word, it’s the thrill of the ride. It’s short and sweet but has those breathtaking moments that will make you want to repeat the ride several times.

What Else To Look Out For

Watch for traffic (usually light) and be especially careful of automobiles backing out of drive ways. Watch your traction on the way up. Control your speed coming into the junction at Montacute.
