Ride Summary

The journey from Khancoban to Kiandra through Kosciuszko National Park has a certain animal attraction. Wait, let’s phrase that – the animals can be a distraction and downright dangerous.

The road between these two towns poses a risk that you always need to be wary of, and that’s kangaroos. There’s lots of them on the journey and keeping watch for these marsupials can make you hopping mad, because it takes away from enjoying the remarkable vista of one of the nation’s great wildernesses.

That aside, this ride is something of a rollercoaster journey because it rises and falls with the valleys that are integral to the dams in the area, making it a ride to savour.

Ride Description

It’s not just the hills that provide the excitement. There are plenty of turns to keep you entertained as the road follows the contours of this remarkable landscape.

The nature of the road also brings its problems. Apart from the kangaroos, the road can get quite narrow in places and it’s not uncommon for a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction to wandering into your lane.

As you can gather, this is a ride that demands concentration but the rewards are worth it. Those hills are also murder on the brakes, so watch your speed as you travel on the downward slope.

Being a national park the scenery is impressive, ranging from full-blown forest to open bushland, with the odd dam thrown in for good measure.

Directions

This 80km ride starts in Khancoban in News South Wales, which is 560km from Sydney and less than 10km from the Victorian border.

Head north out of town on Alpine Way and take a right to Kiandra on Tooma Road. And just keep going. There’s little habitation along the way but being in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, it does get popular with the tourists.

Around Cabramurra the road becomes Snowy Ridge Road and then Goat Ridge Road (the name gives a pretty good idea of the conditions). Chuck a right onto Link Road for the run into Kiandra.

Best Thing About This Ride

If you like an undulating journey then the ride from Khancoban to Kiandra is perfect. The rise and fall makes it an exciting ride, even if you do have to keep an eye open for the wildlife.

The scenery through Kosciuszko National Park isn’t half-bad either.

What Else To Look Out For

Khancoban is a picturesque little town built for the Snowy Mountains hydroelectric project with the Murray 1 Power Station on the Alpine Way open to visitors.

The power station is the second biggest in the Snowy Mountains Scheme and offers tours along with an interactive experience. There is also a café and barbecue area. The hotel/motel in town is pretty good too.

Kiandra at the end of the journey is a nice spot full of history – if that’s your thing – with the restored courthouse an impressive structure.
