Ride Summary

If it’s hills and solitude you like, then the ride from Corryong in Victoria to Tumut across the border in New South Wales is for you.

Following the base of the Snowy Range, it is a well preserved road boasting lots of hills and corners through a part of the country that is as close to the middle of nowhere as you’re going to get in this part of the world.

Ride Description

The 143km journey from Corryong to Tumut is broken up with quaint little towns, State Forest, grazing land and enough variations in the road to keep all of us interested.

This is a journey that those of us who have tried it before will describe to the uninitiated as “she’ll be apples” – and they will mean it literally.

Particularly around the town of Batlow, this area is a prime apple-growing area and there are plenty of fruit stalls dotted along the way and orchards straddling the road.

Because the journey follows the lower reaches of the Snowy Range, you can expect plenty of undulations and curvy bits to enhance the riding pleasure.

The lack of traffic is a big bonus too and it really gives the sense of having this beautiful part of the country all to yourself.

Directions

Starting in Corryong in Victoria, which is less than two hours east of Albury-Wodonga, jump onto the Murray Valley Highway and head north to Towong.

Continue on Murray River Road – don’t be tempted to turn right towards Khancoban – and cross the Murray River as you make your way towards Tintaldra.

The ride veers back to the north-east here on Ardenside Road and takes in the towns such as Tooma, Tumbarumba and Willigobung (which have to be two of the best names for towns going around) before rolling into the apple capital of Batlow.

After Batlow just keep following Batlow Road and once you hit the intersection with Snowy Mountains Highway, the town of Tumut and the end of this ride is not far away.

Best Thing About This Ride

Without a doubt it’s the solitude. There are fewer cars than other routes through this part of the south coast so it makes for a stress-free ride.

Coupled with plenty of hills and turns, this is a ride to remember.

What Else To Look Out For

Batlow is renowned for its apples so it is hard to go by without sampling the local produce. A ride through this region in October will coincide with the Apple Blossom Festival if you really want to immerse yourself in the fruity fun.

Tumbarumba is a nice place to stop along the way, As well as its nature-based activities, at different times of the year there are events such as country music, rodeos and horse racing to spice things up.

Tumut is a pretty place in autumn with the deciduous trees providing a colourful spectacle.
