Ride Summary

Kangaroo Valley, two hours from both Sydney and Canberra, is the perfect place to be at one with your bike and to enjoy in the company of others.

While there are all the amenities and attractions to keep the fussiest of us amused (this is prime tourist country) there are still plenty of undiscovered back roads where you can ride in relative peace.

Kangaroo Valley is serene (OK, maybe not so on weekends when the tourists are out in force) and picturesque. Throw in some hills and tight twisty bits for good measure and this is a place to lose yourself – and want to get lost over and over again.

Ride Description

At its most basic, the Kangaroo Valley ride is 37km of prime country between Fitzroy Falls and Berry. But is more than just the one journey.

The myriad of back roads, alternate routes and everything in between means this is a place where each time the ride can be different.

Getting to Kangaroo Valley is an experience whether it is via Barrengary Mountain in the north or Cambewarra Mountain to the south, which features some of the steepest country around this area and some tight corners.

Kangaroo Valley is often used as a route between Hume Highway and Princes Highway, but is just as good as a journey on its own.

A detour out to Tallowa Dam, which is a great place for camping, is worth the effort just for the fast trip on the asphalt road.

If you don’t mind a bit of dirt, there are reasonable tracks on the way to Nowra. Going this way after rain can be a bit hairy though as there are a few creek crossings.

Directions

From Fitzroy Falls head south along Nowra Road where just before the Barrengarry Nature Reserve there are some nice corners.

Nowra Road becomes Moss Vale Road and leads into Kangaroo Valley proper and just past the town you need to make a decision.

You can either continue straight on for a more sedate ride to Bomaderry along Moss Vale Road via Beaumont, or turn left on Kangaroo Valley Road for a more exciting trip across Berry Mountain to Berry.

Best Thing About This Ride

This one is all about the scenery. The people of Kangaroo Valley reckon theirs is the most beautiful valley in Australia, so that should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

It’s a good ride for people and bikes of all abilities too with enough twists and turns to keep everyone entertained.

What Else To Look Out For

Get yourself a good map because taking the back roads is an adventure in itself on this ride. Don’t be afraid to go exploring.

Of course the town of Kangaroo Valley is a pretty hospitable place too with lots of places to eat, with the pub a standout.

This is a crafty town too, so there are all kinds of trinkets and knick-knacks to buy, and the art gallery on the way to the dam is worth a visit too.
