Best Thing About This Ride

Generally low traffic. Good rest/break points along the way to choose from: Tarago Pub, Wakefield Park, Goulburn, Gundaroo Pub.

The Old Hume Highway has some excellent sweeping bends and virtually no traffic at all.

What Else To Look Out For

There’s 5 or 6 patches of gravel on the Old Hume Hwy (~5m each). Nothing major to worry about, they are all on straights.

Road condition of the Old Hume Hwy is slowly deteriorating due to no maintenance and heavy trucks in the area.

Watch the weather radar/forecasts. Nice warm/sunny day when you head off can easily become near zero between Tarago and Goulburn.

A short hour motorcycle ride along one of Sydney’s most popular roads for bike and car enthusiasts.

Ride Description

One of the most popular roads near Sydney, this motorcycle ride takes in beautiful scenery, challenging roads and lots of places to stop and just take in the moment.

Directions

Heading South out of Sydney, take a left into the Royal National Park at Loftus. The road is twisty but can be treacherous and deceiving. Watch speed warning signs, this road has more motorcycle crashes than any other road in Australia, this statistic probably also reflects how often it is used by riders. Stop for a break at Bald Face (everybody does), and chew the fat with some other bikers. Then down the hill and along the coast road which takes in the Seacliff Bridge. At the far end of the coast road, a right turn up Bulli Pass returns you to the Princes Highway, North or South, you choose, but keep the rubber side down.

Introducing the first annual Newstead Automotive Swap Meet, taking place on Saturday the 25th & Sunday the 26th of February 2012 (last weekend in February). We started pulling the Newstead Swap together 3 months ago to fill the gap when Ballarat was canceled.

The Swap Meet will be held at the Newstead Racecourse, on the same site as the ‘Chopped Rod & Custom’ festival in Central Victoria. With the Newstead Swap located on a fantastic 90 acre plot, the space is there for it to build into ‘the swap to be at’. Other attractions include a ‘Chrome Bumper Show’n’Shine’ and and on site ‘Bar’ with music, along with good home-style food vendors.

72 kilometres of winding roads, sweeping corners, long straights, spectacular scenery and no traffic lights. Enjoy!

Ride Description

In 1964 the Tasmanian government built, what was to become, one of the best motorcycling roads in Australia. The road itself starts at Maydena and heads east navigating past Lake Pedder and finally finishing at Gordon Dam, a 450 ft high wall that holds back 12 sq km of water used to spin three turbines powering 13 % of Tassies power needs. Built to construct and service the Dam, the road itself winds through Rugged mountain ranges and descends into heavily wooded ancient forests, spectacular landscapes tempt you to ease off the throttle at every escarpment to record the moment albeit momentarily before shifting your weight to attack the next change of direction. The smell of moist eucalypt forests only enhances your senses and encourages you to ride on forever. Traffic lights and slow moving cars become a distant memory as you reach the dam wall only too soon . The short break is well worth it, the 72 km return becomes a new road.

Head east along the Gorden River Road (B61) towards Strathgorden.

Ride Description

A great way to spend a weekend ride day (or better yet if you can get out during the week and avoid the crowds, even better). Ride begins in Liverpool, west of Sydney and heads south down the Hume before turning off the main highway and on to interesting roads towards Camden and Picton.

Directions

Camden Valley Way to Camden, follow Old Hume Hway over Razor Back into Picton. Take turnoff to Thrilmere and follow through to Bowral. Follow signs to Kangaroo Valley and turn left when at the Illawarra highway. Follow this to Burrawang turn off and follow to Wilds Meadow. Follow the sign to Belmore Falls. Enjoy the view. Stop at the Robertson Pie shop on the way back.

A great motorbike ride through the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales.

Ride Description

Awesome ride along arguably one of Australia’s greatest motorcycling roads. Ride is affectionally known as the “Snowy Ride”.

Directions

Starting from Adaminaby head along the Snowy Mountains Highway to Kiandra. You can stop here and take in some of the history of the old Kiandra gold fields. Turn left onto The Link Road and on to Cabramurra. Stop here for a coffee and see the highest town in Australia. Then take Snow Ridge Road over Tumut Ponds and Tooma dams, and some of the best scenery and twisty bits in the mountains to Khancoban and then on to the magnificant Thredbo Valley. Take in a chair ride to the top of Australia or continue on to The Wild Brumby Distillery and grab a top bite and sample some of Brad’s famous Schnapps. A quick hoot into Jindabyne and then on to Berridale. Turn left on to Middlingbank road, a great back country road. At the other end turn left and rejoin the Snowy Mountains Highway and head back into Adaminaby. Stay the night at, bike friendly, Snowy Mountains Motel. You have just completed the best “Ride around the Block” in Oz.

A looping ride through the beautiful Kangaroo Valley in NSW.

Ride Description

This ride joins up two other popular rides through the Kangaroo Valley region of NSW.

Directions

The ride starts at Albion Park, up thru Macquarie Pass to the famous Robo Pie Shop. (there are usually lots of bikes up there on a weekend). Grab a coffee and a chat with other riders. Then head out of Robo to Bowral, about 5mins after crossing the train line turn left into Pearsons Lane. This takes you the back roads via the Fitzroy Dam. You then join up (take a left) on the road leading to Kangaroo Valley. Head out of KV towards Nowra/Bomaderry. From here turn left to Berry. Out of Berry head to Kiama then take the Jamberoo turn off. Follow the winding country roads into Jamberoo.

From Jamberoo keep heading back to Albion Park.

Ride Description

Another great ride through some beautiful scenery that the New Zealand has to offer the adventurous rider.

Directions

Head north out of Blenheim on SH 1 after 9.5 km’s you reach Tuamarina. Turning right onto Hunter Rd you make your way the coast and the collection of huts and houses known as Rarangi. From here the Gravel begins along the Port Underwood Rd. The Road twists and turns through native bush on a usually good gravel surface (bends having deep natural camber) passing through eight beautiful little Bays on its way to the hamlet of Port Underwood. Reaching Port Underwood you begin the second phase of the ride as the gravel stops and the tar seal begins and what a road it is as you constantly move from one bend to another. Your tyres will be working hard, your pegs will be scraping and the smile on your face will be so wide that it hurts. All too soon you find yourself in Picton. (For More Bend continue along Queen Charlotte Drive 340 bend in 34km’s).

From little things, big things grow. The iconic Australian song by Paul Kelly, epitomising the Aboriginal Land Rights Struggle sums up the Albury-Wodonga Border Bikefest.
From humble beginnings, the event is now established and poised to develop into a national event of significance.

The Bikefest encourages motorcyclists to display their bikes to the public. Last year, 200 bikes were registered for display and there were some remarkable examples of two-wheeled exotica among them. Over 1,500 members of the public paid to enter the display site off the Lincoln Causeway, near the Murray River between Albury and Wodonga.

The Wodonga City Council has got right behind the event. The Bikefest is currently a joint venture between the Wodonga Lions Cub and the Albury-Wodonga branch of the Ulysses Club Inc., an Australia-wide social organisation for mature and passionate motorcycle riders.

The aim of the show is to exhibit a range of bikes covering vintage, veteran, classic, custom bikes and to bring trade / motorcycle dealers to showcase their wares. Ulysses Branch president, Rex Beard, is astounded at the success of the Bikefest.

“The public support is terrific and I think many people were pleasantly surprised to learn that not all motor cyclists are fire-breathing, child-eating lunatics”, Ulysses Branch President Rex Beard says tongue in cheek. On the day $8,000.00 was raised for charity.

What started out as a very casual social gathering has grown to the point where it could easily become a national event? “There’s nothing like it anywhere in the Albury Wodonga area, ideally we’re placed halfway between Melbourne and Sydney and riders are poised to get right behind it,”

Beard says a feature of the 2010 event was embryonic trade support and the organising committee is approaching national concessionaires to get behind the event. “This event has the potential to attract people from all over the country.” He says the committee is working on a rage of attractions for the 2011 show and is searching for a keynote speaker.

Ride Description

An all day ride through the Eastern Wheatbelt. Enjoy the quiet country roads. Take in the vast expanses of green and yellow crops. Go during spring and enjoy the full display of wildflowers.

Directions

Head out towards Northam on the Great Eastern Hwy but dont enter the town, use the bypass. Take the turn left on the Goomalling rd, continue onto Goomalling, once there continue through town on Main st, then turn left a couple of km out of town on Wongan rd. Ride onto Wongan hills. Turn right taking the Koorda Wongan Hills rd until you reach Cadoux. Continue through until Koorda. Take the Koorda Billfinch rd, turn left onto Gabbin Trayning rd into Gabbin and onto Bencubbin. From there, south on the Bencubbin Kellerberrin rd, through Trayning and onto Kellerberrin. Continue south on Kellerberrin Yoting rd until you hit the Bruce Rock Quairading rd, turn right.

Ride on through Quairading until York. From York take the Great Southern hwy to The Lakes. Turn left back onto Great Eastern hwy until the finish in Mundaring.

Starting in Geradine you take the road opposite the Police station on the bottom half of the high street and follow SH 79 up out of the town. A one off, absolute beast of a Chopper valued at $120,000 and created by the OCC father and son team before their infamous split, will be on display at Harley City through October.

This awesome bike was built in 2004 and includes a Nub (www.nubgrafix.com) ‘monster paint job’, a Russ Wernimont gas tank, 131” H&L Engine, Baker 6 Speed left side drive transmission and a 240 inch rear tyre with a six up four out Rolling Thunder frame. To say the bike is powerful is an understatement – it packs 150HP.

The bike was created by Paul Teutel Senior and Paul Junior in response to a brief from Valvoline to create a “big, bold” bike for a nationwide sales promotion in the USA. The bike toured the States, tempting the two-wheeled fraternity to collect tokens for a chance at owning this masterful piece of machinery.

Ride Summary

This route has got to be one of Canterbury’s most popular motorcycling roads. (Known locally as the Akaroa GP)

Ride Description

This route is just as good if not better in the reverse direction. A beautiful piece of winding road takes you first up to the summit and the Hill top Tavern with great coffee and a chance to take in the views of the bay. You descend quickly into an extinct volcanic which now forms a natural inlet and sheltered harbour. Once you reach sea level you follow the Shaw line twisting around many small valleys and climbing over a couple of small peninsulas. You eventually find yourself in the small town of Akaroa. Originally a French settlement it has kept its French feeling even today. If you follow the road through the town you will find a smell key side with what is reported to be the best Fish and Chips in the South Island.

This short but entertaining ride takes you from the city of Dunedin along the northern Shaw of the Otago Peninsula to the Royal Albatross breeding Colony at Harington Point.

Ride Description

Also accessed through the Albatross centre is the disappearing gun, this Second World War artillery piece uses hydraulics enabling it to be raised for firing and then lowered into the hillside for cover and reloading. For a variation to the return journey, turn off the coastal road at Portobello. The road climbs steeply all the way up to Larnachs Castle. This stately home has fantastic gardens and is famous for its high tea which includes scones with jam and creams. From here it’s a pleasant ride down the top of the peninsular back to Dunedin.

Follow the signs to Portobello on this twisting road just a meter or so from the water. This route has got to be one of the world’s greatest motorcycling roads. A beautiful piece of winding road takes through native forest deep into the heart of the Fiord land National Park.

Ride Description

Starting with sweeping bends between mirror like lakes then ventures deep into native forest. It is not long before you find yourself riding through deep valleys with hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the cliffs on either side. Stopping for a moment at the Hommer Tunnel prepare yourself for a challenging decent through the mountain, you emerge in the middle of a high col with the road cut into the cliff. A few hairpin bends enable you to be back at the floor of another forested valley for the last 45 km’s of the ride. Ensure you take the opportunity to cruise the last section of the fiord with one of the many small cruise ships (about 2hours). The journey back is even better that the way in with the tunnel now becoming one of the high lights, as you accelerate up the tunnel with the sound of your exhaust and the exit up ahead it’s like being shot out of a canon.

Leave SH1 at the Bridge over the Hurunui River following the valley until the road splits. follow the right hand trail for another 6km’s to the next major track junction. From here you follow the road ahead into what looks like a private farm entrance. Now all you do is follow your noise up the valley over a small pass then continue until the final summit grants you views of the Alps. Dropping down the hill you meet the tar seal at a cross roads. Here to go straight over finding Culverdon in 4-5kms.

The Mt Imlay road is a 58 km long stretch of logging road that runs from the Monaro Highway (near Rockton), almost down to the sea and the Princes Highway (Narrabarba), near the Victoria border.

Ride Description

This is an exceptional road for motorcyclists, featuring big, wide, sweeping corners that can be taken at speed, and fantastic scenery. The road surface is usually very good, but it can be chewed up by log trucks so beware. Riders who don’t mind riding on occasionally slippery dirt can take the turnoff to Pericoe and ride backroads and forest tracks down to Eden. This is an active logging road, however, so riders must be prepared to meet log trucks on the road.

Directions

The western end of the Mt. Imlay Rd. joins up with the Monaro Highway between Cann River and Bombala. Watch for the sign for the turnoff to Eden. The turnoff at the Princes Highway end, though marked, is easy to miss since it is easy to mistake for a forest track.

5 Victorian SES Road Rescue volunteers are riding 5,000 klms across the East cost to raise awareness of road safety during MotoGP week, starting at Pakenham then on to Toowoomba on the 9th October 2011.

To get things going a Street Party and Ride off has been organised for the 9th October with a ride from Pakenham to Gembrook starting at 8am with the ride off leaving at 10:30.

Hot Rods, Classic cars & bikes and a Show N Shine will he held by the Lake at Lakeside Pakenham (Malway Ref: 215 H5)

All money raised is for Road Trauma services for motorbike and car crash victims and their families.

The 153 km ride from Overlander Roadhouse to Denham and beyond to Monkey Mia is fast and open, and provides a bit of a taste of what it’s like to ride through the deserts of the American Southwest.

Ride Description

The road west from Overlander Roadhouse to Denham is excellent and can be ridden at speed. Watch out though, because there is a lot of tourist traffic and the route is policed quite heavily. Denham is a nice tourist town that overlooks Freycinet Reach. Not far from Denham is Steep Point, the westernmost point on the Australian mainland. Monkey Mia is 25 km from Denham and provides an opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with dolphins. Just to the north is Francois Peron National Park where there are natural hot springs. Also not to be missed is the Hamelin Pool, which is filled with stromalites which have been built up over billions of years by single cell organisms. The road continues up to Shell Beach – 110 km of beach covered in tiny shells.

Directions

Ride along the North West Coast Highway from Overlander Roadhouse to Denham. Monkey Mia is 25 km past Denham. Just beyond Monkey Mia is Shell Beach.

This lovely, little known route through the Chittering Valley follows the Swan River north of Perth.

Ride Description

Western Australia is not known for hills. Where there are hills, there are curves, and motorcyclists love curvy roads. Fortunately, the Chittering Valley Road follows the Swan River that winds its way through the farmlands north of Perth and has plenty of curves. There is also a network of roads that lead off of the main road between Bullsbrook and Bindoon, leading to places like Muchea and Toodyay in the Avon Valley. While the main road is in good condition, some of the side roads are surfaced with ball bearing gravel which is unique to Western Australia. As its name suggests, riding on this stuff is like riding on ball bearings. For a change of pace, visit Chittering Estate Winery and from there, carry on to the Moondyne Nature Reserve.

Directions

Turn right off the Great Northern Highway at Bullsbrook and follow the road north along the river to Bindoon, 40 km away.

This 29 km circuit travels over the St Marys and Elephant passes on its way up and back down from Falmouth. It can be extended by heading west along the Esk Highway.

Ride Description

Travelling south along the sunny East Coast on the Tasman Highway, turn off onto the A4 and head to St Marys. The road along the St Marys pass is tight and winding, and as the signs say, passing is restricted. Riders can also turn left at Chain of Lagoons, north of Seymour, and take Elephant pass up to St Marys, coming back down over the St. Marys pass. St. Marys pass does get more truck traffic than Elephant pass though. This 29 km ride can be extended by heading west out of St Marys along the Esk Highway to the Midland Highway for some fast riding. Turn south to Campbell Town, and then head east to Lake Leake and on to the Tasman Highway.

Directions

Depart from Falmouth and ride over the St Marys pass to St Marys, then on towards the Chain of Lagoons and ride over the Elephant pass.

An exhilarating circuit ride over 185km that takes in the some beautiful scenery and challenging terrain.

Ride Description

This route offers a great circuit ride for motorcyclists who are looking for a challenge. The route follows some great roads as well as some dirt and gravel tracks and allows for plenty of climbing to get superb views over the Firth of Thames. It offers the opportunity to extend the days riding to either a longer route, or a stopover trip, and with plenty of motorcyclists using this trail, you should have company at one of the many biker friendly motels along the way.

Directions

Head north from Thames and along the SH25. The trail follows the coastline until Kereta when it starts moving inland and offering some challenging climbs. At Coromandel you’ll have the option of continuing along the SH25 as it travels east, or turning off northwards and extending your trip by taking the gravel and dirt roads around the northern Peninsula near Fletcher Bay before coming back out at Coromandel and continuing east along the SH25. The route changes to the SH25A just south of Duck Creek, and then turns north again to return to Thames when it reaches the junction with the SH25 again.

The variety along this route is great and there are some very challenging twists and turns to enjoy. The beaches here are excellent and worth a visit.

This is a scenic but short 129km motorbike route that takes you into the coastal town of Dunedin with a choice of two routes.

Ride Description

This trail follows some of the rocky routes in the southeast of the South Island. The SH85, which eventually joins the SH1, is the main route to follow, but the SH87 slightly further south offers a more scenic route. Both trails are perfect for bikers, dropping into the lower terrain and allowing for some enjoyable km’s of easy, undulating roadway to follow. This isn’t one of the longest routes in the area, but it is one of the most relaxing.

Directions

Head out of Ranfurly to the east on the SH85. Either continue on this route until you turn left onto the SH1, or take the right turn onto the SH87 at Kyeburn for the scenic option.

The Hyde Hotel on the SH87 is a refurbished rest stop and hotel that is also a great place to stop for a quick meal in the middle of your journey.

Watch out for law enforcement on the SH85. This is the main route and is heavy with traffic, so their presence there is frequent.

This short 170km motorcycle ride takes you through the Lindis Pass Trail, an historic Maori route that offers some excellent riding.

Ride Description

This route heads south over some high lands and takes riders through some dry, barren lands with a continually warm. The first part of the route is fairly remote, although the lower ends offer some civilisation to enjoy. The road is well maintained in most places, and allows for confident riding, although it is also popular with tourists so it can get busy.

Directions

Leaving West from Omarama on the SH8, you’ll follow the Old Lindis Pass Trail over the high ground, past Queensberry and into Cromwell, where you’ll turn right and take the SH6. This road will take you the short distance into Queensland, which lies on the edge of the beautiful Lake Wakatipu.

This is an historic ride with evidence of the traditional Maori lifestyle everywhere you look. The local area was once famous for its gold mining, and there are several sites along the route where you can stop and gaze in awe into the deep man made gorges.

The route is popular with tourists so beware the lazy Sunday driver who likes to hog the road. There is a coffee shop at Tarras that is popular with bikers.

This is 253km of road that winds through alpine landscape and forested area on the route from Reefton to Christchurch.

Ride Description

This route passes through some of the most scenic National Parklands on its way across country from Reefton to the east coast. The ride is mountainous, particularly at the start and offers some wonderful curves and steep climbs over the peaks before descending to the shore on the other side. It isn’t too taxing, so riders of all experience levels should find this one enjoyable.

Directions

Leaving south from Reefton, head along the SH7 through Springs Junction and Rahu Saddle before you reach the junction of the SH1 at Waipara. From there turn right, and it’s a straight journey south into Christchurch.

This 182 km ride hugs the east coast of the South Island and offers an enjoyable 2.5 hours riding.

Ride Description

This route offers the option of following the main SH1 road along the coast, or moving inland and taking the scenic SH70 which provides some great riding. The route here is largely flat, although it does offer some superb views of the distant mountains. It can be busy, traffic wise, but if you opt for the inland route you should leave some of that behind.

Directions

Head out of Kaikoura on the SH1 to the south. If you want to stick to the coastal route, then simply follow this road the whole way into Christchurch. Alternatively, turn right just outside the town and take the Inland Kaikoura Road until it meets the junction with the SH70. Turn right and follow this route until it joins with the SH7 southbound, and that will take you back to the SH1. From there, turn right and it’s a short ride into Christchurch.

This is a long trail that links the main towns of Napier and Wellington, and takes in the lowest point of North Island.

Ride Description

This route begins comfortably with gentle sweeping curves and unremarkable undulations, but once you’ve got into it properly, and left the main routes behind, you’ll experience a long drive of sharp turns and unexpected corners as you wend your way southwards. You pass through plenty of small villages and with a relaxed, country feel, but also challenge your nerves on the high mountain pass of the Rimutakas.

Directions

Leave Napier on the SH50 or the SH2 and head towards Takapau where your only option is the SH2 southwards. When you reach the junction at Woodville, briefly jump on the SH3 before turning left onto the SH57 and heading south once more. At Ohau, you’ll turn left onto the SH1 and follow it all the way into Wellington.

You can make this route as hard or as easy as you like, but whichever route you decide, there will still be challenges to enjoy and views to admire along the way.

What Else To Look Out For

Don’t get your speed up as you get into the tricky sections, because some of these corners are unexpectedly tight. Fuel up before leaving Napier and take every opportunity you can after that, because some sections are noticeably barren when it comes to fuelling stations.

Ride Description

A challenging ride for the adventurous motorcyclist, on a route that takes over three hours through the stunning scenery of the North Island.

Ride Description

This route, known as the Heritage Trail, leaves from Stratford and heads North East through some beautiful native Maori bushlands and the Tangarakau Scenic Reserve. The trail is rugged and twisting, and includes approximately 20km of route made up of gravel.

There are plenty of Heritage sights to stop at along the way, although the experience of riding this remote trail is an experience in itself.

Directions

Leaving from Stratford you’ll head North East on the SH43 through the towns of Pohokura and Tahora until you reach the tight right-hander at the Mangaparo Road junction. Continue on the SH43, which follows the Whanganui River, all the way into Taumarunui.

The scenery, particularly in the Tangarakau Scenic Reserve is stunning and it’s good to take time out to enjoy the view. The Whangamomona Pub is a haven for bikers and a great place to stop to break up the ride.

Ride Description

A fun ride along varied road conditions including some of the smoothest twisties in this region as you near Gembrook. Road is best mid-morning when there is little traffic but the fog / mist has risen and visibility is good. A fun ride of varied conditions and difficulty.

Ride Description

This ride is about an hour in length (62km) which takes you through the Nana Creek State Forest and the Lower Bucca State Forest from Ulong to Coffs Harbour. A fun ride, worth the effort exploring further in this region.

Directions

Ride begins from Ulong and heads along the Dorrigo-Coffs Harbour Road towards Coramba. Turn left at Coramba along the Orara Way to Nana Glen, before heading coast-wards to Coffs Harbour.

This is a stunning route that takes you into the heart of the Fjordland National Park to Milford Sound.

Ride Description

This is a challenging ride across the Southern Alps that passes through gorges, over mountain passes and through the testing Homer Tunnel that is carved through the rock, dark and badly maintained. The route offers winding turns to conquer as well as long sections through some spectacular scenery, and the return trip is every bit as enjoyable as the road out.

This isn’t a ride to rush, so make sure you have plenty of time to spend. You’ll really want to savour this trip, and there are too many viewpoints and photo opportunities along the way to pass up.

Directions

Head north out of Te Anau on the lesser road, and it will take you as far as Millford Sound.

Take care at Homer Tunnel. The general advice is to follow a car through so you can see where you’re going a little better. And be mindful of the weather forcast, because this is one of the wettest places in New Zealand and all that rain can cause problems on the roads.

This three hour long popular biking ride covers nearly 200km between Taupo and Wanganui.

Ride Description

This road takes you from the historic crater town of Taupo, through some stunning inland routes, until you reach the coastal town of Wanganui. The rider offers the chance to extend your trip by taking one of the many side routes, and gives riders plenty of flexibility when it comes to making plans. Often challenging, the twists and turns on this trail make it absolutely perfect for motorcycles, and the scenery of the volcanic mountains is very enjoyable.

Directions

Head south out of Taupo on the SH1 and follow it until you reach Turangi. Turn off onto the SH42, and then left onto the SH47 which takes you around the north of the Tongaririo National Park. At the junction with the SH4, turn left and head all the way into Wanganui.

The route is not great for large vehicles, but perfect for bikes, so the chances of getting held up behind a heavy are reduced.

Whilst only being a short ride, this is a fun road particularly the section through the Berowra Valley National Park.

A beautiful 141km ride through high mountainous terrain, and along a dramatic coastline, on the Taupo-Napier Highway.

Ride Description

Vineyards along the eastern coastline near Eskdale, before climbing 357m into the mountains of the Rangitaiki region. The route in this area is a series of furrows that wend their way over 105km of the ride’s length, through a desert plateau and pine forestations. The trail is far from flat and offers an interesting two hours riding, and several of New Zealand’s National Parks are just a short detour away.

Directions

Leaving from Napier and heading north along the coast to Eskdale, you’ll take the SH5 inland. The route passes through Glengarry and Tarawera before reaching the Rangitaiki region which is a long, almost straight route through to Taupo.

Best Thing About this Ride

The route is an enjoyable ride that showcases some of the best landscapes that New Zealand has to offer. Taupo Lake, at the finish, is a superb natural crater resulting from a volcanic eruption. It is home to some thermal pools that add a bit of luxury to the day’s ride.

What Else to Look Out For

The Rangitaiki area is favoured by law enforcement with ticket books in hand, so watch your speed along here.

A fun 1 – 2 hour ride in the West Gippsland region of country Victoria.

Ride Description

This motorbike ride ends up at the old confussion rally site. There are several tight corners, with short straights that follow on to darker corners. Some corners are sharp hairpins and many are blind so be careful and enjoy.

It is a great road especially for the advanced rider, novices will also enjoy this ride at a more leisurely pace. A caravan park, wide river and licensed shop is waiting at the end of the bitumen.

Directions

Traralgon to Glengarry then on to Cowwarr. Left turn to Seaton and then left again towards Licola.

Ride Description

A fun couple of hours on the bike, from Swansea on the coast heading west inland to Wollombi. Plenty of great rides in this area so make a day of it.

Directions

Head around Lake Macquarie towards Cessnock. Turn left to Qorrobolong and Millfield then left again to Wollombi.

The short 151km ride is a great little southbound route along the north eastern coastline of the North Island.

Ride Description

Leaving from the scenic Coromandel Forest Park, this ride takes in a succession of local beachside towns and market villages and offers beautiful views of the local wine country on a ride that is relaxing and enjoyable. The route is popular and with all that traffic it’s perfect for a lazy ride, and gives you a chance to stop at Whangamata, a welcoming fishing and surfing town, for a little extra time out.

Directions

Head south from the edge of the Coromandel Forest Park, taking the SH25 to Waihi. From there head either east or southwest on the SH2 as both routes will lead you to the SH26 which you can follow to Thames. Join up with the SH2 again and follow that on your last leg of the journey into Tauranga.

There’s a lot to see and do along this 115 km ride from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin on Western Australia’s southwest coast. Besides being an excellent motorbike ride, this route provides lots of opportunities for sightseeing, caving, surfing, fishing, and wine tasting.

Ride Description

Caves Road travels south from Cape Naturaliste and runs parallel to the coast. Numerous spur roads that run down to the beach split off along its length. Caves Road is generally in good condition, but the pavement can get chewed up in places by traffic. Caves Road meets up with the Bussell Highway not far from Augusta, a short distance from the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse which overlooks the meeting of the Indian and Southern Oceans.

Directions

Take Caves Road from Cape Naturaliste to where it joins up with the Bussell Highway and then carry on to Augusta and Cape Leeuwin.

Best Thing About this Ride

There are more than 350 caves along Caves Road, but only a few are open to the public. There is also access to excellent surfing and wind surfing at places like Prevelly. Many of the rivers in the area are stocked with trout. Margaret River wines are renowned. If all that isn’t enough, there are spectacular views all along the coast.
