Minor correction - the road is called the Great Alpine Road not Great Alpine Way. Also, it is worth commenting that the road from Omeo to Falls Creek is sealed and a fantastic loop of approx 240k's.

I paid a deposit to rent a Harley Fatbob from Aussie Biker and when I went to collect the bike I was advised that although they had taken my deposit, the bike had been sold and was not available. The only bike they had available was a Suzuki V-Strom. After two days of riding a dual sport with mid controls my knees were about done. I later found out I was supposed to have been offered a Triumph Rocket III. Overall I have to say this was the worst motorcycle rental experience of my life. I was extremely disappointed with Aussie Biker.

Sounds very interesting - but, as a road bike rider with pillion (and some aversion to gravel) can yo advise how much 'interspersed' gravel there is :-) and if it is suitable for road bike.

Hi Kristy, there are a few options - probably best to look in Melbourne city for a more competitive hire rate. Garners are recommended (http://www.garnersmotorcycles.com.au/). Cheers.

Shaved 2.3 seconds off my PB at Philip Island last track day. Izzy is the best by a country mile. Recommend to anyone who wants a proper job and after care....!

I live at Mount glorious, and I am amazed that any local would do such a thing ! As a motorbike rider who rides up and down the mountain every day often twice a day for the last decade I have never seen one local do such a thing !!!!! The gravel on the tight bends is a common occurance up here and is usually the result of a combination of rain, traffic/trucks and mowing.

Hi! Have delighted in owning the Guzzi since 2005, but unfortunately the body parts have let me down and now must retire to riding pillion. We are talking about getting a GoldWing or similar, can you trade my Guzzi 750ieNevada 2005 model to help please? I bought it from u guys, as new, u have the service record, well almost.
The agreed value by my insurance company is around $8,000. Can we talk Turkey, or what? Maureen 0458162216, PS, got anything to trade?

This is one of my favorite local rides & a road I've travelled often over the past 25 years
I last rode it on Sunday 19/06/11 & it was hard not to notice the deteriorating state of the road.
The weekday truck traffic is taking it's toll with many large potholes forming, plus many larger sections of the road surface becoming very crumbly.
What was once an enjoyable ride now requires 100% focus on the road.
With the winter months setting in, the road into Walhalla gets very little sun & as a result green patches are begining to appear so take care.

Thanks Graeme for taking the time to comment - will update the ride accordingly. If you know of any similar rides in the area would be great to get them on the site - you can suggest rides easily using our Suggest a Ride page (http://www.motorcyclerides.com.au/suggest-a-ride).

Umm...the ride from Nymboida to Dorrigo doesn't include Bellingen so there is no final ascent into Dorrigo. Bellingen is to the east of Dorrigo whereas the ride you describe approaches Dorrigo from the west. The ride down the Dorrigo mountain to Belligen is also a worthy ride however.

I did this ride ...and all the others

I purchased a great secondhand Triumph 1050 Tiger a few months back from Eltham .
On the way home to NSW, I thought why not, its late summer and not to late in the afternoon,,,,lets take the `Long Way Home` to Albury .

Great ride .
I was a bit over careful ,,what with a new bike, big bike, strange road ..
Ive now done all of the great rides in and around the Yarra Valley and more .

I have just purchased a Helmet Cam and have made a few short vidoes attached to Tigesr crash bar .

Will try it mounted on the side of my helmet next .
Its all good fun .
Safe Riding

It is my favourite local ride. Much less traffic than the GOR. Early morning or weekdays and there are few cars. I was prompted to make a comment because reading the discription made it sound like a safe easy ride. First the road can be off camber with tightening bends. There are some corragations near sharp bends that will affect grip. Most noticably the surface is prone to leaf litter build up, dampness and moss growing on the road surface. There are some nice straights and the bends are plentiful. Entering or leaving Lorne be aware of Tourist traffic and towards Deans Marsh there are farms so you might meet tractors etc. There are also camping sites and the turnoff to "The Falls" rock concert was about half way along the road this year.

It is a beatiful ride through the forest, but please be careful :)

As a bonus there is the Martian Cafe at Deans Marsh. Plenty of bikes pull up for a chat.

I live at Beerwah and can I suggest once at Beerwah, turning around and back up Peachester range (It's so much more fun going up) and turning off to Maleny using Kilcoy-Beerwah road. From Maleny onto Kenilworth and just the otherside of Kenilworth using Obi Obi road to return through Mapleton, Flaxton and Montville all nice old style towns with plenty of views of the coast. There's also a nice little cafe just before Kenilworth owned and operated by a chap that rides a Tiger, and the place is always filled with other motorcyclist to share a yarn with while having lunch.

A great addition to this ride is the Walhalla-Tyres Rd which takes you back down into the Latrobe Valley close to Traralgon & Morwell.
Living in Morwell, this is a favorite local loop ride for me and when doing the trip friends from out of the area, I usually take them on to the Thompson Dam before turning back to Parkers corner & onto Walhalla.
I'll publish my version of the Walhalla Ride soon.

Hi Guys, I just wanted to post this as it was pretty disturbing. I caught one of the locals today spreading broken plates on the road just after Nebo on the way to Glorious. I stopped and went back to clear the road and pulled up next to him. He started picking it up and then road off. He is in his late 50's or so wearing no shirt and on a red Avanti mountain bike. Be Careful

Hi Judy, thanks for taking the time to comment.

Yes I have amended the ride description based on Peter's feedback and comments. My reasons for this are noted above.

Not all rides on Motorcycle Rides are ridden by me (I am based in Victoria and unfortunately cannot travel as much as I would like to) nor are all of the ride descriptions written by me. We tend to prefer local riders who ride the roads to describe in their own words what the road is like.

It is obvious that this ride has struck a nerve with many local residents and I will reiterate, it was not our intention to mislead anyone or offend anyone with our description of this ride. Like I said above, Motorcycle Rides is all about promoting the adventure of getting out on our bikes and exploring new places to ride. It is, and will never be, a place to promote reckless riding etc. It is just not what we do nor what we believe in.

On a last note - all comments on our rides are published and hence your warnings (and the other comments) noted above will of course now be part of the information about the ride allowing our readers to be informed (in addition to making their own view of the region).

Cheers......

Its Not only the Bike Riders that are Hoons in the Aera as Many of the Locals Regularly Drink Drive and also Speed in the Area ( I See this Daily) but in the end if Cessnock council would actually Repair the Piss Poor Roads that we have here, and that the RTA have already Paid the council for, then we would have better signage Better, Roads and a Safer Community it is NOT ok for the council to keep reducing the Speed limit simply because they do not want to repair these roads. Yes It Sux that we have to deal with the 1st response to many of the Accidents and deal with the Trauma from them but ultimatly its not the Bikes or the cars that are causing this Problem it is Cessnock Councils Piss Poor Job of looking after our Roads and Ratepayers.

I have just read your article (amended it seems)- twice - and the comments and responses.

To me the following sentence is still making this sound like the ride is meant to be driven fast. "The roads on this route are smooth and fast, making them an excellent choice for street bikers and those looking to get a little thrill from their trip."

You do not appear to have added any comments about the safety on the roads. Indeed your only warning is to look out for other riders on the corners looking for the same thrill.

Have you personally ridden this ride? Did you comprehend any of the comments about overtaking on double yellow lines, bad cambering, rough surfaces or the prelevance of native animals.

I join with the other locals in welcoming safe, respectful riders to the area. It's beautiful here and people should be able to see this but for so many it's been their last ride with death or serious injury the result.

The RTA and Police have even erected special signs warning of a 35km Motorcycle Awareness Zone. It is dangerous and Lemming Corner has been named due to the repeated accidents in this location where, it seems, no one has learn the lesson. Lemmings follow each other even to their death as do the visiting riders.

Please reconsider the wording of your article with inclusions like 'while the road can be dangerous for those in a hurry it is a challenge for riders who are responsible and careful' or 'many tight corners with double yellow lines mean limited overtaking opportunities' or even 'wonderful scenery with possibility of seeing some local wildlife which often appears suddenly before you so appropriate speeds are the flavour of the day'.

Or would accurant and careful descriptions like these affect your readership?

Thanks Alan / Clare for contributing to the conversation. I feel somehow I have been unintentionally caught in the cross-fire or a much larger issue and I am now defending all riders that ride in this area! Clearly I cannot do this, and can only comment on how my friends and I ride and what we are trying to promote on Motorcycle Rides. We all hate to see accidents and I agree that there are unfortunately riders (and drivers) that behave irresponsibly.

Lynda, with respect I am not sure that comments like your latest actually contribute anything constructive to the conversation. I have acknowledged that the use of the previous words used to describe this ride were misleading in their intent, hence why I amended the post.

I have just read-with dismay- the above article,I am a resident of Wollombi,Last week we farewelled our retired fire brigade chief, who sadly passed away. He, along with many of our local volunteer Fire brigade members have . had to attend too many fatal bike accidents on this road. More often than not, they were riders going for going for that' 'great corner' or that 'fun sweeper'. Particularly on the aptly named Lemmings Corner where so many riders have died. A lot of Fire Brigade members have had to seek counselling and are really suffering as a result.
Bikers of all skill levels???? Are you serious? This is a difficult and dangerous ride with sharp corners, bad cambering and roads in a shocking state of disrepair. Along with city 4WDrivers who seem to drive in the middle of the road. Also wild life crossing both day and night.
Yes, I agree this is a great road and everybody has the right to ride it and I understand your somewhat innocent enthusiasm for it. But please please impart to your readers that this is no un-skilled ride and point out the many possible pitfalls to them.PLEASE MAKE THEM AWARE! As a community we are tired and saddened by hearing sirens every other weekend.. .

MC Rider - while we see many reasonable & responsible riders up here, every Saturday & Sunday sees some 'boy racers'.

We would prefer to not have to scrape bikers' off the road... if you can't comply please make sure you don't traumatise, main or kill anyone else...

Get you speed & thrills on a track somewhere - there are heaps less roadside trees, poles, rocks & cliffs on a race track.

Wow, we seem to have struck a nerve here unintentionally - my sincere apologies for that.

Adrian - I take your point and I am familiar with the scenarios that you mention. Here in Victoria we have the same problem in the Yarra Valley and the Great Ocean road; bottom of the line there will always be some riders that just do the wrong thing. But I do stand by my point that when we described the word "thrill" in our ride description we did not mean illegal or dangerous riding - and we are certainly NOT promoting anything illegal or dangerous on our site. Riding a bike is a thrill - it is exciting and a fun activity, all at legal speeds.

Peter - More than happy to update the description, and I agree the use of the word "speedster" did not send the correct message nor was it our intention to be miss-interupted. I will also update the accuracy of the region / service station. Cheers for that.

Lynda - I am truly sorry you feel that way and you are of course entitled to your opinion. If you do have a moment though, please take the time to read the 125+ rides on our website - I think you will soon realise that we do not promote anything other than exploring new regions/areas to ride our bikes. This is of course in addition to promoting bike friendly businesses and events (via our business directory / events section) that often are financially dependent on riders visiting their towns and communities.

Doing 80kms is not even going to thrill granma,of course they are going to break the speed limit.
Your site promotes it,you can say what you like.
Spend a weekend up here, see for yourself.

I appreciate that you changed the text but you can't deny that it previously said:

"Best Thing About This Ride
This ride is a speedster's paradise, with wide open possibilities and beautiful scenery attracting hundreds of bikers from surrounding areas each day to push down there throttles"

This was irresponsible and promotes the young cafe racers to twist the grip without realising the state of the road and the lack of and/or incorrect signposting - or their talents in riding on a country road.

Thanks for updating it.

We are very serious about stamping out bad riding behaviour here - we are talking to the police and council constantly about what we can do to have people fined heavily for speed and other dangerous and anti-social behaviour including trespass by dirt bikes on private land that they assume is national park or state forest and that they have a right to use. If there's a closed gate, it ain't public land.

Two other things, the servo you mention is at Kulnura - not between the points on this ride and this valley is in the (lower) Hunter Valley, not the Northern Rivers which are well over 100km north and on the coast.

Hi Daniel - thanks for your response.

As a resident we are dealing with an increasing problem in terms of motorcylclists throughout the region. The issue is that in reality for a car driver the Bucketty - Wollombi drive is quite hideous. The car accidents in the main are due to bad roads & poor local road knowledge, rather than recklessness. Of course some drivers think winding roads are a blast & drive like loons, but for most it's not a fun drive. Motorcycists however see these same thin winding roads, dramatic hills & a few open straights as a 'thrill' & end up putting a lot of lives at risk. I personally have been overtaken by motorcyclists on some horrendous corners & am yet to have a car driver do the same thing. Knowing that the region is in fact a motorcyclist black spot would it not be better to encourage a 'different breed' of cyclist than thrill seekers? Particularly when those thrills are not embraced by the local community & put lots of lives at risk.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for contributing to the conversation.

I am the first to agree that there are some riders out there that don't do the right thing. As there are plenty of drivers doing the same. I don't believe however that we here at Motorcycle Rides encourage that type of riding on anywhere but the race track. I ride every weekend and do so for the thrill of it, but do this all within the legal limits and come home safe. As too all of the riders I ride with. Life is too short after all.

Cheers,

Daniel

I'm with Peter & Lynda. The word 'thrills' sort of
suggests getting a bit low on a few corners & giving it a
bit of a crack out of them?! This area gets invaded by
motorcyclists every weekend & many of them ride completely
disrespectfully & inappropriately. I live in the town of
Wollombi & regulalrly see motorcyclists hitting 80 before
they even leave town (50 zone) & overtaking across double
yellows constantly. There is some double yellows just outside of
Lemmings Corner which are a different kind marking where a guy
missed the bend a couple of weekends ago & went into a rock
shelf!

Hi Lynda, I appreciate your comments and concern but I am unclear of why you believe we are promoting a public road as a race track? No where in the ride description do we refer to the road as a race track and Motorcycle Rides does not promote excessive speed or dangerous riding. Thanks, Daniel.

Why is a public road that is NOT a race track being advertised as one.
The speed limit is 80km.

Please DO NOT think that this ride is a speedway. We have far to many motocyclists die on this stretch of road.

The speed limit is 80kmh for the whole of the above ride for a very good reason. Cessnock Council roads are very bad, poorly signposted and there are no emergency services here. It is our volunteer fire brigade people - people like you - that have to attend as first response and then deal with the mental issues of this for years to come. An ambulance is 30 to 50 minutes away and we generally have the Westpac Rescue Helicopter called for motorcycle accidents.

Motorcyclists are more than welcome (I'm one and that's how I found this place and then moved here) but we want you to arrive and get home safely. If you want to corner fast, go to a racetrack, if you want a pleasant, relaxed ride in the country and a great lunch, please come and visit Wollombi Valley.

Great ride.

The only thing I would add though is the lack of advisory speed and/or corner signs. For instance you go from an 80kp/h zone into a 100kp/h zone and then straight into a sharp left and there are no signs whatsoever telling you there is a sharp corner. It’s like that the whole way through the Powelltown to Neerim section. Might catch a few guys out that’s all.

Actually you *do* need to look out for something - people on the wrong side of the road in cars. They come in two flavours - tourists from the city who aren't used to winding roads and who cut corners out of carelessness and fatigue, and (they'll argue they don't) locals who get along pretty good, particularly those in company (Snowy Hydro) cars. I used to live there...

On the 'turn off to Selwyns' bit - you can get to Selwyns on tar, but from there it's dirt - right through to Cabramurra and occasionally very scenic.

At Cabramurra, go up to the look-out at the old town, but also go back up the hill out of town and between the dirt road to the left (to Dry Dam, Kings Cross and Selwyns) and the tar road to the right (to Tumut Pondage and Khancoban) is the road up to the radio tower - sensational views from up there!

Thanks Bruce for the comments. Sounds like this area near Brissy is similar to the heavily policed areas of the Yarra Ranges near Melbourne. Completely ruined this area in many ways, such a pity as the terrain was made for riding.

Totally agree with Thom above. There are patches of gravel that have have obviously been dumped by the grumpy old treehuggers that live up there, as the gravel's too dense and mysteriously located to have been blown off a driveway access for example. Sick b*st*rds seem to like to try to cause the maximum damage by gravelling tight blind bends - typically a few km west of Nebo township. Of even greater concern is the ridiculous level of enforcement. Nothing sporting with these guys as they know the terrrain very well, hiding & shooting through the bush towards peak speed spots like the base of hills or on big straightaways after twisties etc - Usually within the faster stretches of the 60km zones - eg a few km west of (beyond) Nebo and a few km west of (beyond) Glorious cafe. Pity - As despite having a well dodgy road geometry and loads of dangerous trees and banks, its oh so close to Brissy and offers an excellent ride for the intermediate to advanced skill level rider

Admittedly very few up here too, apart from when we get WAY off the beaten track; however that's the nature of the beast!
We are extending our range of tours slowly but surely, Nan & Sukhothai were both new last year, we'll keep pushing further south to satisfy our 40-45% base of returning guests. I know the south pretty well, where we holiday ourselves when we get a moment! Where are you based?
I'm also involved in negotiations with a couple of companies in Cambodia, see if we can't come up with a couple of dual country tours.

Quite a few folk doing tours down south anyway though, and this being the small industry it is I wouldn't want to step on any toes; quite a few of them are good mates and we throw a fair bit of business each other's way. No point in making enemies now eh?

Cheers,
